Active RFID tags are powered by
battery or permanent DC connection and provide a much increased
read range.
In the case of vehicle tracking, an RFID "puck" can be bolted to
the underside of a car, and as the car rolls up a driveway, a
reader beside or embedded in the drive picks up the tags ID and can
open a gate, turn on lights if dark, and due to the fact that each
RFID number is unique - even open the correct garage door!
